Treating high blood pressure. It is used in certain patients to decrease the risk of stroke. It is used in certain patients to treat kidney problems caused by diabetes (diabetic nephropathy).
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It works by relaxing blood vessels. This helps to lower blood pressure

 

MANUAL

Take losartan exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
You may take losartan with or without food.
Call your doctor if you have ongoing vomiting or diarrhea, or if you are sweating more than usual. You can easily become dehydrated while taking this medication, which can lead to severely low blood pressure or a serious electrolyte imbalance.
Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. Visit your doctor regularly.
It may take 3 to 6 weeks of using losartan before your blood pressure is under control. For best results, keep using the medication as directed. Talk with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 3 weeks of treatment.
If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using this medication even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You may need to use blood pressure medication for the rest of your life.

 

CONTRAINDICATIONS

You are allergic to any ingredient in losartan.
You are pregnant.
The patient is a child with severe kidney problems.
You are taking a medicine that contains aliskiren and you also have diabetes or kidney problems. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure if a medicine you take contains aliskiren.

Use losartan as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

An extra patient leaflet is available with losartan. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about this information.
Take losartan by mouth with or without food.
If you cannot swallow tablets, ask your doctor or pharmacist about preparing a suspension of losartan.
Take losartan on a regular schedule to get the most benefit from it. Taking losartan at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.
Continue to take losartan even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
If you miss a dose of losartan, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
